What is Personal Assistance?

Personal Assistance is a form of support where a person receives direct assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, eating, household chores, budget management (if needed) attending appointments and building socialization skills that will help the person live in a home in their community. It could also include help with medication (if the Personal Assistant (PA) has been trained to give medications)

When and Where is PA Service Provided

PA may be provided in the home or in the community. It can be provided at any time of the day, as it is needed.

The minimum requirement include

Who Is Eligible For Service?

Anyone who has been approved by the DMRS to receive Medicaid waiver services is eligible for our services; however anyone who is receiving a residential service such as, Supported Living, Residential Habilitation Medical Residential Services or Family Medical Residential supports may not get PA services. Also, PA cannot be provided during the same time that someone is receiving Day Services.

How to Begin Services

If you have been told that you qualify for PA services, ask your ISC (Independent Support Coordinator) or DMRS Regional Office Intake to call TPA and let us know you are interested in having TPA provide PA service for you.

When we have received this information we will come out to your home for an initial meeting to talk about what kind of assistance you need, and what kind of hours of the day you will need. We will then leave and begin to look for a personal assistant that best suits your needs. This person will then come out to meet and talk with you to see if they will be able to help. If you approve of the person we will begin to train the person at our offices and prepare to have them come out and begin to assist you.

Once your PA has completed orientation including a day when they come out to learn about how you would like to be helped (individual specific training, we will be ready to begin your PA services. If you require assistance with medications your PA will have to undergo a 3 day course on medication administration before they can assist you with medications.

How are Services Provided?

Once services are started your PA will come and help you on the days and at the times that you have requested. Your PA will write notes to document what he/she is doing to help you and how you are doing with the help. The PA will turn these notes in to her supervisor regularly. You will have a PA coordinator assigned to you. The PA coordinator will be responsible for:

  1. Scheduling your PA.
  2. Supervising your PA
  3. Reviewing the service on a monthly basis to evaluate how you are doing and if your goals are being met.

  4. Addressing any concerns that you may have.
  5. Training the PA when there is a need or as required by the DMRS.
